Cellular telephone service provides mobile communication by employing a network of cell sites distributed over a wide area. A cell site contains cellular telephone service equipment such as a radio transceiver and a base station controller which manages, sends, and receives call traffic from the mobile telephone in its geographical area to a cellular telephone switch. Cellular telephone service equipment also includes towers, antennas and the mobile telephone units. Calls are sent from the local cell site to a distant cellular switch called a mobile telecommunications switching office (MTSO). The MTSO places calls from land based telephones to wireless customers, switching the calls between cell sites as the customer travels.
